Installation Instructions

Installing Adobe Reader for Macintosh

To install Adobe Reader, follow these steps:

Make sure you have at least 70 MB of available hard disk space for Adobe Reader.

Drag the Adobe Reader folder to your system into the Applications folder. When the copy operation finishes, open the Adobe Reader folder, double click on the Adobe Reader icon and follow the installation instructions.

Installation Issues

The Mac OS X native operating system is required

Only the Mac OS X native operating system is supported. Classic mode and earlier Mac operating systems such as Mac OS 9.x are not supported.

Checking for Updates

Adobe Reader can automatically check for updates, which helps ensure that you are using the latest version. Use the Updates panel in the Preferences dialog box to determine how often to check for updates.

To update or set updating preference options:
1. Choose Adobe Reader > Preferences and then select Updates on the left side of the dialog box.
2. For Check for Updates, specify how often you want to check for updates. (If you want to turn off automatic updating, choose Manually.)
3. Click View Notifications to preview any notifications before deciding whether to update. Click OK to exit the dialog box.
4. If you don't want Adobe Reader to display a notification when updates have been checked for, deselect Show Auto-Update confirmation dialog.
5. Deselect Display notification dialog at Startup if you don't want to be advised about available updates when you launch Adobe Reader.
6. Click OK.

You can install updates by choosing Help > Updates.

Troubleshooting Issues

Backward Compatibility

Using Adobe Reader to view and print files created in earlier versions of Acrobat
You can use Adobe Reader to view and print PDF files created with earlier versions of Acrobat taking note of the following:
-Some fonts may be substituted. Acrobat performs font substitution if the font requested is not available on the user's system. When such PDF files are printed, the printed document will appear differently if the font used within the PDF file is available within the printer. Similarly, when such PDF files are viewed on a different system, if the font used within the PDF file is available on that system, the PDF files will view differently as well. PDF files that use the Symbol font, for example, will substitute the Adobe Pi font if the Symbol font is not present on the system being used. You can determine if Acrobat is performing font substitution by selecting Document Properties > Fonts.

Configuring Your System

Turning on keyboard access
To turn on keyboard access follow these steps:
-Open your Mac OS X System Preferences panel from the Apple menu
-Select the "Keyboard" icon
-Select the"Full Keyboard Access" tab
-Select the "Turn on full keyboard access" check box
-Select the "Any control" radio button
-Close System Preferences

Printing

Shrink Large Pages
Shrink Large Pages shrinks large pages to fit the currently selected paper size, but does not enlarge small pages. Pages larger than the imageable area of the currently selected paper size are shrunk to the imageable area of the currently selected paper size.

Purchasing or Viewing an eBook

Mac OS X 10.2.4 is required
Before you can activate Adobe Reader 6 for use with purchasing or viewing eBooks, you must have Mac OS X 10.2.4 installed on your system.

Viewing

Installing Asian Language Files for Adobe Reader
Asian Language Files are available for Adobe Reader. With any language version of Adobe Reader, you can display Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files that contain text in Chinese Simplified, Chinese Traditional, Japanese, and Korean (CJK). You need the additional Asian fonts installed in order to view the PDF file on non-native systems even if the author of a PDF file embeds CJK fonts in the document. All you need to do is install the appropriate Asian Language files for use with Adobe Reader. You can install them on demand (when a file that requires the fonts is opened) using the Updates feature.

Using eMail to Transfer PDF Files

Note: you may see these issues with other file formats as well as with PDF files.

Using eMail to Transfer a PDF file from a Windows computer system to a Mac OS X computer system
If you transfer a PDF file from a Windows computer system to a Mac OS X computer system using email, the PDF file attachment may become corrupted. A scenario where this may occur is when using Outlook Express or Outlook 2000 on a Windows computer system and either Eudora or Entourage on a Mac OS X computer system. To avoid this problem, configure Outlook Express or Outlook 2000 on the Windows computer system to use uuencoding. To do this follow these steps (instructions are for Outlook Express but the steps are similar for Outlook 2000):
-From the Tools menu select Options...
-Select the Send tab
-By Mail Sending Format select Plain Text
-By Mail Sending Format click on the Plain Text Settings... button
-Select the Uuencode radio button.
-Click OK a couple times to confirm the settings.

Using eMail to Transfer a PDF file from a Mac OS X computer system to a Windows computer system
If you transfer a PDF file from a Mac OS X computer system using email to a Windows computer system, two PDF files may be received. A scenario where this may occur is when using either Eudora or Entourage on a Mac OS X computer system and Outlook Express on a Windows computer system. The first PDF attachment received contains a good copy of the PDF. The second PDF attachment is corrupt and should be ignored.
